Trees that produce fruit in winter

We have lots of winter berries in our yard, including black, red and blue currants, winterberries, gooseberries, and crabapples. If you have any questions about which fruit is in season in your area, check out the Local Harvest website (www.localharvest.org). They have a list of what’s in season in your area, and what you need to do to make sure you can harvest your produce in the winter.

The University of Vermont Extension Service has more information on harvesting fruit in the winter, and more tips to help you avoid a frost-free freezer.

Insect-eating plants

There are a number of plants that eat insects, including marigolds, nasturtiums, and many other plants in the sunflower family. We have some of these in our yard, and we harvest the nasturtium flowers to use in salads. We also have a number of other plants that we use for pest control, and we’ll talk about them in future blog posts.

So now you know the basics about what you can harvest from your yard and what you should be planting to make sure you can harvest it all year round. What are your favorite foods from your yard?

I just love the smell of sunflowers in the morning. The scent is so uplifting. They are one of the few vegetables I grow in my garden. I also grow spinach, kale, lettuce, and broccoli. I use them all in my meals. I would be lost without them.

I love your blog! I’ve been thinking about adding some vegetable garden to my property as well as growing some fruit trees. I live in Southern CA and have been reading your blog for several months now. It’s great to read about your experiences and to see pictures of your beautiful garden. Thanks for all you do!
